Macedonia - Tours

Day 1: Arrive in Skopje . Sightseeing tour: Old and new parts of the city – Old Stone Bridge, old bazaar and caravan inns, City fortress, the Church of Holy Salvation with the intricate wood-carved iconostases, Mustapha Pasha Mosque, National Museum, Monument of Mother Teresa…Dinner in a national restaurant and overnight.

Day 2: Breakfast and morning visit to the monastery of St.Panteleimon (,,Lamentation of Christ,, and the other frescoes are the highest levels of Byzantine fresco-art!) Drive to west part of Macedonia .Visit the painted Mosque in Tetovo and the tour continues to Mavrovo and the canyon of Radika River. Coffee break in the central part of the National Park and visit the monastery of St. John Bigorski, today’s highlight of our tour. Dinner and overnight in Ohrid.

Day 3: Breakfast .A day to discover the city which is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Pick up from the hotel and drive to the city harbor from where the group will proceed on foot through the old part of Ohrid. The town has preserved its old nucleus on the hill below Tzar Samoil’s fortress.Visit the Cathedral St.Sophia,the Church St.Clement and the Gallery of icons-a most impressive and valuable collection. A marvelous view extends from the church of St.Panteleimon, the new one build near the remains of 9th Century church of St.Clement who is the founder of Ohrid literary school. Afternoon excursion to the Monastery of St.Nahum (10th C.) Nahum and Clement were disciples of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius and the founders of the educational center,so tese two men are the most honored saints in Macedonian Orthodox Church. St.Nahum lived and worked on this beautiful spot on Ohrid Lake and he was buried in the monastery. Dinner and overnight in Ohrid.

Day 4: After breakfast drive through the apple orchards to Prespa Lake and visit the church of St.George near the village of Kurbinovo, where the most impressive fresco of Angel is dominated masterpiece. The tour continues to Bitola (visit the pre Christianly city of Heraclea Lyncestis) and Prilep (visit the Monastery of St.Arhangel Mihail.) Light lunch and tasting of wine in a cellar in the vineyards area in the central part of Macedonia. Dinner and overnight in Skopje.

Day 5: Breakfast. Optional excursion to Matka Lake near Skopje (Drive along the canyon of Treska River to the Monastery of Virgin Mary and walking tour to the Church of St.Andrew from 14th C. End of the tour.
